This is a detailed itinerary with a selection of some of the best places included in our Travel Guide about what to see in Lanzarote. Of course, you may customise your itinerary depending on your interests!

Day 1: Timanfaya and the north of Lanzarote

Timanfaya National Park

Your trip begins with a visit to the most popular attraction in Lanzarote: Timanfaya National Park and Montañas del Fuego (an impressive volcanic landscape created after the eruptions). For your visit, you MUST go on a guided tour that starts at Islote de Hilario, where there is a parking area where you can leave your car. These guided tours include:

  • Islote de Hilario, with active geysers.
  • Bus Route around the Volcanoes and Montañas del Fuego.
  • El Diablo Restaurant, where dishes are made thanks to the heat of the ground.

Another option is to book your excursion in advance including transfer from your accommodation and a tour that covers the top 3 attractions in Lanzarote: Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.

Jameos del Agua

Your next stops will be in the north of the island, where you’ll visit two different parts of a lava tunnel: Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. In the first one, there are three holes that connect the tunnel with the outside world. The local artist Cesar Manrique used light to highlight the beauty of nature.

Keep your eyes open on your way down and discover the ‘jameitos’, those tiny blind albino crabs that are unique in the world!

Cueva de los Verdes

You’ll find Cueva de los Verdes just a few minutes away Jameos del Agua. This cave also belongs to the lava tunnel where local people used to hide from pirates and corsairs. However, this visit will be totally different, as you’ll find a wide gamut of colours and shapes of solid lava on its walls and ceiling.

Be ready to discover the Big Secret of La Cueva de los Verdes. Keep it a secret!

Mirador del Rio

Your next stop is this awesome viewpoint that was also designed by the local artist Manrique. Enjoy its wonderful views over a whole archipelago. With clear skies, you’ll be able to see the island of La Graciosa and four islets called Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Alegranza and Roque del Oeste.

Nearby, there is also a restaurant where to relax while enjoying the views.

Must-see visits are Guadalupe’s Church, Ermita de la Vera Cruz (an old chapel) and the Museum of Timple Canario (a traditional Canarian 5-string instrument). On the outskirts, you may visit Santa Bárbara Castle, which holds a very interesting Pirate Museum.

Day 2: Cuervo Volcano, El Golfo, Los Hervideros Cliffs and Papagayo

Cuervo Volcano

Let’s start the day with some hiking. This easy trekking route to the crater of Cuervo Volcano belongs to the Volcanoes Natural Park. Although there are lots of volcanoes in the area, this one is the first volcanic cone that erupted in Timanfaya in 1730. It is one of the shortest routes too, which makes it perfect for your getaway to Lanzarote.

Another option is the route to Caldera Colorada where you’ll see an enormous volcanic bomb. More information here: hiking routes in Lanzarote.

Los Hervideros Cliffs

It’s time for Los Hervideros Cliffs, where waves hit the rocks heavily, creating a magical visual effect and a roaring sound that will impress all of your senses. The rougher the sea is, the more spectacular it will be. Keep your eyes and ears open!
